Thinking about criminal law dissertation questions

I’ve been seeing a lot of students get stuck right at the start of their dissertation, especially when it comes to Criminal law dissertation questions. It sounds simple at first, but once you actually sit down to choose one, it suddenly feels like everything is either too broad or already overdone. What usually helps is just slowing down and thinking about what part of criminal law actually made you stop and think during lectures. Sometimes it’s not even the “big” topics like murder or theft, but smaller issues like intent, defences, or how laws are applied in real cases. And honestly, the best dissertation questions usually come from curiosity, not pressure. Like asking why a rule exists the way it does, or whether it still makes sense today. It’s less about finding a perfect question straight away and more about shaping it bit by bit until it feels right.
